Boxing Preview: Weekend (July 31, Aug 1) Odds Round-Up For Overseas Bouts

luke_campbellPasay City in the Philippines sees boxing this Friday and the Super Bantamweight twelve round bout between Bernabe Concepcion (33-6-2) and Juma Fundi (27-12-3) for the vacant WBO Oriental belt. Concepcion is a heavy (-11000) favorite over Fundi, who is returning at (+3000). The match has no over/under posted. Concepcion has fought at a much higher level than the veteran Fundi, who is going to be fighting for the first time outside of Africa. On Saturday ay Craven Park Stadium in Hull, United Kingdom sees Matchroom Boxing promoting a show set to air on SKY TV. The main event is a twelve round Lightweight bout between Luke Campbell (11-0) and Tommy Coyle (21-2) for the vacant WBC International title. Campbell is a gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics where he fought as a bantamweight, and he has opened a huge favorite paying (-1700), with the comeback on Coyle at (+1100). Coyle brings a more complete resume as a pro, as he has held several regional titles and is on a solid six fight winning streak. This is the first match of Campbell’s career scheduled for twelve rounds, while Coyle has been scheduled to go twelve five times. There is no over/under posted for this fight as of yet. A second bout already has a line from Craven Park, and it is the Super Welterweight 12 rounder between Brian Rose (26-3-1) and Carson Jones (37-10-3). This re-match is set to be highly contested, and it sees Rose come in as the (-170) favorite, with the comeback on Jones at (+150). The two first met in February with the vacant WBC International belt on the line, and Jones walked away with the belt after a 1st round TKO stoppage. Jones has kept a high level of competition throughout his career and is the more experienced fighter. He has gone 20 rounds over two fights with World titleholder Kell Brook and he has tangled with international fighters such as Roberto Garcia and Jesus Soto Karass for almost a decade now, so there may be some value in Jones as a slight underdog. The full fight card features 12 bouts, and several others could pop up at the books over the week. At heavyweight, undefeated Dillian Whyte (14-0) faces Brazilian workhorse Irineu Beato Costa Junior as he tunes up for a potential match-up with Britain’s 2012 Heavyweight gold medalist Anthony Joshua, whom he has beaten in the amateur ranks. Also on the bill is former Lightweight world champion Ricky Burns (37-5-1) who is looking for a quick bounce back against Prince Ofotsu (15-4). Burns is coming off a May of 2015 loss to Omar Figueroa Jr (24-0-1) and is (1-3-1) in his last five outings. Another line that is not up at the books but is likely to pop-up comes out of New Zealand, where lauded Heavyweight prospect Joseph Parker (14-0) faces his toughest challenge to date when he meets massive Australian Bowie Tupuo (25-3) in a twelve rounder with a handful of regional titles on the line. Also on the card is popular Jeff Horn (10-0-1) as he faces the experienced Viktor Plotnykov (32-2), also with regional belts on the line. Lines could also materialize for the Carlos Zambrano vs Jose Sanmartin Featherweight bout for the interim WBA World title scheduled for Peru, and Argentina hosts an extremely high level women’s bout at Featherweight with the WBC and WBA world titles on the line between Edith Soledad Matthysse and Jelena Mrdjenovich. Each lady brings a world title to the match in what is essentially a unification bout of two of the major recognized world titles.
