Post-UFC Fight Night 70: On the Chopping Block

UFC 181 - Gordon v SammanThe Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to Hollywood, FL with UFC Fight Night 70 and the nine-fight card produced some exciting scraps and finishes. The battles are now in our rear-view, so let’s take a look at which of the evening’s competitors we may no longer see inside the Octagon… ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK Eddie Gordon After knocking out Dhiego Lima in the first round of The Ultimate Fighter Season 19 Finals, “Truck” has gone on to lose three in a row. He was first knocked out with a come-from-behind head-kick by Josh Samman, then he dropped a split decision to Chis Dempsey a couple of months ago, and in a quick turnaround, he was submitted by Antonio Calos Junior via rear naked choke in the third round of their UFC Fight Night 70 main card bout last night. Now having dropped three in a row and being finished in two of the contests, I think there is a good chance Gordon receives his walking papers from the promotion, despite being a Serra-Longo fighter. I would not be surprised to see him get one last crack, but the more likely scenario is that we have seen the last of “Truck” inside the Octagon. Danny Martinez “The Gremlin” made his promotional debut at UFC 169, dropping a unanimous decision to Chris Cariaso. He followed that up with a unanimous decision loss to Scott Jorgensen in a ‘Fight of the Night’ bonus winning performance, and at last night’s UFC Fight Night 70 in Florida, he dropped a third consecutive straight decision inside the Octagon, losing to promotional newcomer Sirwan Kakaii. Having yet to have a taste of Octagon victory, Martinez is on a three-fight skid and could certainly be facing contract termination. The only thing that could save him is the short notice nature of the bout combined with the fact that he competed outside of his natural weight class of 125-pounds for it; against a former featherweight, no less. I would not be surprised to see Martinez get another shot (in the flyweight division) but I would say more than likely he will eb receiving his pink slip from the promotion, as usually three losses in a row is three losses in a row to them, regardless of how you acquired them.
