The Surprises And Disappointments Of UFC Fight Night 64

UFC Fight Night 56 Newcomer Breakdown: Leon EdwardsSurprises and Disappointments is a column featured on MMAOddsbreaker.com after every UFC event, highlighting three fighters who had surprising performances and three fighters who disappointed. Here were the three biggest surprises and the three biggest disappointments from UFC Fight Night 64. Surprises Mirko Cro Cop — The main event of UFC Fight Night 64 saw Mirko Cro Cop turn the page and defeat Gabriel Gonzaga in their rematch, this time by third-round TKO. Cro Cop was having trouble early on dealing with Gonzaga’s takedowns but once “Napao” started to gas Cro Cop took over and picked up arguably the best win of his entire UFC career to date — all three stints of them. Maryna Moroz — In one of the biggest upsets of the year in MMA, Maryna Moroz defeated top women’s strawweight contender Joanne Calderwood in her UFC debut by first-round armbar. I didn’t expect Moroz to be anywhere near competitive in this fight so to see her get this win was really something else, and as far as I’m concerned she deserves the next title shot. Leon Edwards — Most bettors were expecting a competitive bout between Leon Edwards and Seth Baczynski, but it was anything but as the Brit needed only 8 seconds to knock the Polish-American out cold. Edwards has really good striking and if he can shore up his wrestling he could be someone to watch out for in the UFC welterweight division. Disappointments Joanna Calderwood — I’m not sure what happened to Joanne Calderwood, but she went from being the No. 1 women’s strawweight contender to a pretender following her first-round submission loss to little-known Maryna Moroz. I still think Calderwood is a good fighter but this look was terrible for her career and it remains to be seen if she can bounce back from it, or if it will eat her alive and stall her progress up the strawweight ladder forever. Sergio Moraes — Everyone was expecting Sergio Moraes to smash Mickael Lebout, but the unknown Frenchman gave the Brazilian all he could handle, stifling most of Moraes’ takedown attempts and nearing doing enough on the feet to steal a decision. Moraes ultimately won the fight, but he looked pretty bad and is a good fade candidate in his next outing. Daniel Omielanczuk — Daniel Omielanczuk has good striking, but he won’t be able to show it off in the UFC against anyone with a wrestling game. Anthony Hamilton is not an elite wrestler by any means but he was still able to take the Pole down at will and beat him up on the ground for a decision win. Omielanczuk is now 1-2 in the UFC, and he will probably be cut since he can’t wrestle.
