Boxing News: Anthony Joshua gets Jason Gavern on April 4th

Anthony NelsonLondon’s Metro Radio Arena hosts Ed Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing this Saturday night with an 11-bout boxing card headlined by Anthony Nelson and Jamie Wilson fighting for the vacant Commonwealth Super Flyweight title. The card is still getting the finishing touches on it, as several fighters will be making their debuts, and the card is full of undefeated and once defeated prospects from the British scene are on the card. Several lines have already appeared at the books for this card, but the matches have changed. Nevertheless, the books will be carrying odds for this card sometime later this week. Nelson is (9-0) and Wilson is (5-0) and with 1 KO a piece in their young careers, neither has looked like a big stopper before. Look for Nelson to be a big favorite, as he has already won a British title, while Wilson’s opponents are a combined 21-183-5. The big news here is that Hearn has added undefeated Heavyweight Anthony Joshua has been added to the bill this past week. He is slated to face veteran Jason Gavern, who at (26-19-4) has lost two fights in a row, including a UD loss in an eight rounder just two weeks ago. Joshua defeated Michael Sprott in his last outing back in November of 2014 fast, and Gavern is probably a notch below Sprott in level at this point in his career. Joshua did not intend to take off close over four months but a slight injury led to a fight with Kevin Johnson being postponed. He is rushing back here to get ring time in, as the Johnson match is set for the end of May. Look for Joshua to be something like a (-20000) favorite. Also up for grabs at Cruiserweight is the WBC International Silver title, as Stephen Simmons (11-0) faces Jon-Lewis Dickinson (15-4) in a bout scheduled for ten rounds. Simmons is short on experience and he has a lot of fights in the early going where the opponents were journeymen, but in 2013 and 2014 he stepped up to fight at a regional level and he handled the jump in competition nicely, winning a BBBofC title and adding the belt he is defending here. The card will air on SKY in the United Kingdom, and fighters still waiting for opponents to be defined include undefeated Simon Valily (6-0) and Hosea Burton (11-0) as well as experienced Super Featherweight Stephen Smith (21-1). Also on the card (17-1) Light Heavyweight Travis Dickinson faces Mustafa Chadlioui in an eight round bout that sees the Brit have a wide experience advantage and will likely come in a big favorite for this one.
