Boxing Preview: Murdock vs Siaca in Australia this Thursday (Nov. 6)

MurdockOdds are up for Thursday’s boxing card promoted by Jamie Myer in Broadbeach, Australia that is set to air on FOX Down Under. The main event of the evening features Super Middleweight action as 22 year old up-and-comer Rohan Murdock faces experienced Puerto Rican veteran Manny Siaca (25-7). Murdock is a big (-1000) favorite over Siaca, who is returning at (+535). Siaca has not fought in 18 months, and he is going on 40 years old. He had a several shots at winning a world title in his career, losing to the likes of Mikkel Kessler and Danny Green. Murdock has a strong (15-1) record, and when you delve deeper, his lone defeat was in just his third fight, so he has been able to sustain a nice winning streak while increasing his rounds. Murdock is a big puncher too, with 12 stoppages in his 16 total fights. Though it likely will not matter in the end, Murdock and his handlers have scheduled a match for mid-December against a yet to be determined opponent. In women’s action, Australia’s Lisa Marie Vizaniari is a big favorite (-1000) to defeat Kathy Rivers (+535) in their scheduled 10×2 round fight for the vacant WIBA Heavyweight title. Vizaniari is just (7-0) and she is in her 40s as far as age, but at roughly 240 lbs, there is not a lot of competition out there for her to fight. Rivers is also in her forties, but her experience advantage with over 20 fights under her belt (14-5-3 overall record), she has not fought since 2007 and is likely to be giving up a lot of weight in this one. Even with the world-wide upswing in boxing competition in the women’s ranks, the competition appears to be thinnest at Heavyweight. The IBO Female Heavyweight title is up for grabs on December 6th in Saint Maartens as Sonya Lamonakis faces Carlette Ewell. Both of those women are on the plus side of 40 as well, so a win for Vizaniari could mean a future match with Lamonakis or Ewell. Right now, the book already has posted lines on two of the eight round bouts scheduled for this card. New Zealand’s James Porter is an underdog at (+335) in his match with Aussie Dane Mulivai, who pays back at (-505). Both men have under 10 fights to their name, but the line may favor Mukivai because he would appear to have the heavier hands, as all five of his wins have come via the short route. Undefeated Matt Casboult (5-0) is a big underdog at (+500) as he faces the tough Michael Mlacic, who pays at (-900). Mlacic has returned to boxing in 2014 after a nearly 10 year layoff and he is now 34 years old. Since he launched his comeback in June, he is (1-0-2) against competition designed to bring him along. Casboult has just one KO in his five wins, so he will be looking to test his boxing skill against a veteran with a good record, but the line would indicate that Casboult may have bitten off more than he can chew.
