MMAOddsBreaker.com’s Submission of the Month for July 2017 goes to former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman at UFC on FOX 25 on July 22nd.
Heading into this main event matchup against Kelvin Gastelum in front of his hometown crowd on Long Island, NY, Weidman was an underdog who desperately needed a victory. He took over the fight from the opening bell, finding success with his takedowns and wrestling, as well as his offense on the feet. The tables appeared to be turning towards the end of the opening stanza, as Gastelum dropped Weidman with a punch and attempted to go for the finish. Fortunately for Weidman, he was saved by the bell. Starting the second round, the Long Islander took this fight back and continued controlling every aspect of it. Then in the third round, Weidman ultimately secured a slick arm-triangle choke to earn the tap from Gastelum, becoming the first fighter to ever put him away inside the distance. Submitting Gastelum is no easy task, and the way Weidman pulled it off was beautifully slick. It was an excellent submission by the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and well deserving of MMAOddsBreaker’s Submission of the Month for July of 2017. Congratulations, Chris Weidman!
