MMA Odds and Ends for Tuesday: Paige VanZant joins ‘Dancing with the Stars’, Rizin MMA signs Wanderlei Silva

Paige VanZant joins Season 22 of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Officials recently announced that UFC strawweight Paige VanZant will be joining the Season 22 cast of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ VanZant (6-2), is coming off a submission loss to Rose Namajunas back in December which snapped her three-fight win streak. She’ll join Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell as MMA fighters who have traded in their gloves for dancing shoes on the popular reality series. Joining the 21-year old on the upcoming season includes NFL players Von Miller and Antonio Brown, and retired QB Doug Flutie. Other cast members include Mischa Barton, Nyle DiMarco, Kim Fields, Marla Maples, Wanya Morris, Geraldo Rivera, Jodie Sweetin and Ginger Zee. The latest season will debut March 21 on ABC.   Rizin MMA signs Wanderlei Silva, will fight in a grappling match on April 17th Wanderlei Silva will be competing April 17th at the Nippon Gaishi Hall in Nagoya, Japan. While he won’t be competing in MMA, the former PRIDE champion will be paired with a yet-undermined fighter for a “special grappling tag match. His team will square off against another duo in Kazushi Sakuraba and Hideo Tokoro. Silva has signed a  “multi-year contract” with the Japanese promotion. Also noted in the press release, the UFC veteran will compete under MMA rules in future Rizin bouts. Also confirmed for the April 17 event will be a 180-pound catchweight fight between Hisaki Kato (5-2) and Yuta Watanabe (19-6-4) as well as a shoot-boxing match with Rena Kubota (1-0) and Kanako Murata (0-0) will make her MMA debut. Featherweight Pedro Gonzalez takes on Andres Jeudi in the main event. Gonzalez (10-5) heads into this matchup on a three-fight winning streak including wins over Josh Lange and Billy Vaughan. Jeudi (7-5) is coming in on the opposite end going 1-3 in his last four fights. In addition to the main event a number of amateur fighters will also be competing for a pro-MMA contract with CES. CES MMA 35 takes place at North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Mass. Unlike past events, this card won’t air on AXS TV. Here’s an updated look at the card.
