The two betting favorites who have seen the most public support on the UFC on FOX 17 fight card are Michael Johnson and Kamaru Usman. Johnson (-305 to -470) takes on veteran Nate Diaz (+225 to +375) on the evening’s main card and Usman (-140 to -255) takes on British striker Leon Edwards (+100 to +235) on the Fight Pass prelims. Johnson has been on the way up, while Diaz has appeared to be on a decline, and it is clear that the public expects that trend to continue. Usman is a talented wrestler and that is generally the main weakness for English fighters. However, Edwards has moved to the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, CA to work on his wrestling ahead of this bout, so it will be interesting to see how it fares against the TUF winner Usman. A couple of underdogs who have seen some good support are Valentina Shevchenko and Francis Ngannou. Shevchenko (+170 to +130) makes her promotional debut against veteran Sarah Kaufman (-230 to -140) on the FOX Sports 1 prelims and Ngannou (+110 to -135) makes his Octagon debut against fellow promotional newcomer Luiz Henrique (-150 to +125). Shevchenko’s striking credentials have many convinced she is capable of pulling off the upset against the former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champio, and it’s Ngannou’s strength and athleticism that has many thinking he is likely to make quick work of the undersized Henrique. More importantly, it is UFC lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone (+205 to +175) who has received strong support from the public in his rematch against 155-pound Champion Rafael dos Anjos (-285 to -190). The reason for that could a combination of people being impressed with Cerrone’s eight fight winning streak and being worried about how dos Anjos will perform with the new drug testing policy and IV ban currently in place. Also, I assume they have in the back of their minds that while dos Anjos won the first fight, it was Cerrone who started taking over in the third and final round of action. Now set for a five round main event title fight, they like the chances of “Cowboy” evening-up the score the score in this rematch.
