The mixed martial arts (MMA) fantasy website Kountermove is back with another exclusive game for MMAOddsBreaker.com readers. If you’re not familiar with how the site works, here’s a brief snippet from the site owners, themselves.
Kountermove brings the traditional fantasy format to MMA. Accumulation of points and a salary cap make fantasy MMA more intriguing than your basic “pick ’em” contest. With other industry pros on the site it is the place to be if you know your MMA. The game is fairly simple on its face, games are played over a single night during one event. Prior to the event, players get a total of $25,000 fantasy dollars to pick five fighters for your team. Each fighter is given a specific salary by Kountermove. Kountermove assigns a value for each fighter based on how we believe the fight will go. Points are scored if a fighter scores a finish, wins a round, lands significant strikes, knocks an opponent down, scores takedowns, secures dominant positions or attempts submissions. The more dominant your fighters’performance, the more points you’re going to score. If you score more points than your opponents, then you win the money.

If you’re interested in a few pointers on potential fighters to pick, I’ll be offering my analysis and potential picks to click. In case you have your doubts, I have a very nice track record of success with the website, having won plenty since its inception. Before I get to my picks, remember that to get the best value out of your team, you have to try to get an average of $5000 per fighter with your team of five fighters and your $25,000 salary cap. That means if you want to pick a big favorite from UFC Fight Night 68 like Cain Velasquez ($5800) you have to balance it out by picking some underdogs that you think will perform above and beyond. Sometimes it’s not worth it to pick the overwhelming favorite. Without further ado, here are some of the picks that stand out for me: Henry Cejudo ($5200): This is a showcase fight for Cejudo. Chico Camus doesn’t possess the power or submission ability to secure a stoppage victory against the former Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler and there’s zero chance he can win a decision. Cejudo is going to absolutely dominate Camus from start to finish, and there’s a decent shot he could pull off a finish in this contest. Cejudo currently sits at over -1000 according to the latest betting odds, which is downright crazy considering you can get him for a half decent price here. Underdog Pick of the Night Eddie Alvarez ($4800): I don’t see a lot of value in the bigger underdogs on this card so I’m going to take someone you can get for a reasonable price who I think will overperform. Alvarez gave Donald Cerrone a run for his money in the first round of his UFC debut before slowing down. He’ll be facing someone who’s older, smaller and has less of a reach and pure punching power in Gilbert Melendez for his second appearance. Yes, Alvarez should have his hands full with the former Strikeforce champion, but I think he has far more left in the tank than Melendez at this point, who seems to be performing worse and getting hit more in each fight we’ve seen him lately. Fighter to Avoid Cain Velasquez ($5800): This has nothing to do with how I think Cain will perform. In fact, I expect Velasquez do look terrific tomorrow night. That being said, he’s so expensive that you simply won’t be able to fill out the rest of your team with reasonable options. Putting Cain on your team means you’ll have to take a big risk with someone like Nate Marquardt ($4500) or Francisco Trevino ($4400), likely both. Yes, I expect Cain to have a great night, but there are plenty of other cheaper options who will actually allow you to flesh out a realistic team of five fighters with a chance to do something special.
