MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas today officially opened up the full MMA odds for Saturday night’s big UFC 156 event through Several Bookmakers. For now, though I’ll offer some quick thoughts on the newly-released preliminary lines. UFC 156 is another difficult card from a betting perspective, but there’s a few lines that stand out for me. First off, I like Jacob Volkmann at -300 over Bobby Green. Volkmann is one of the strongest fighters and best wrestlers in the UFC lightweight division, and this is Green’s first UFC bout so he might experience the “Octagon jitters.” Another line I like is Francisco Rivera, who opened as a -200 favorite over Edwin Figueroa. Rivera is one of the hardest hitters in the UFC bantamweight division and, coming off a suspension for a banned substance that took away his W over Ronald Delorme, he should have plenty of motivation to prove why he’s a contender at 135 pounds. And one more fight that stands out is Jay Hieron vs. Tyron Woodley. It’s a close fight, but at +130 my early inclination is to take a stab at Hieron to come through as the underdog. All in all, there are some very competitive matchups on these prelims so pick your spots.
