And here are my initial thoughts on the PFL 2019: Week 4 Opening Odds:
- The main event sees last season’s welterweight winner Magomedkerimov take on Curtis in what should be a good fight between two skilled and experienced fighters. Magomedkerimov is riding a nine-fight win streak that includes a perfect 6-0 record in PFL. He won last season’s 170lbs tournament with a submission win over Ray Cooper III. Curtis is riding an eight-fight win streak into this bout which includes a win in his PFL debut over Andre Fialho back in May and a knockout win on season two of Dana White’s Contender Series. Curtis is a really quality fighter but this is a very difficult matchup for him and I think you have to go with the big favorite Magomedkerimov here.
- The co-main event looks to be a complete mismatch in the women’s lightweight division as Harrison takes on Frier. Harrison is the top women’s MMA prospect in the sport right now and has already racked up a perfect 4-0 record in PFL. Frier, meanwhile, was tapped out by Sarah Kaufman in her last outing. Look for Harrison to finish this fight, and when the totals come out the under may be the way to go here as this fight should be a wipeout for Harrison.
- Speaking of Kaufman, she takes on Samad in another women’s lightweight bout. Kaufman has won four straight fights since a split decision loss to Valentina Shevchenko in the UFC back in 2015. Samad, meanwhile, returned from a four-year layoff to pick up a win in her PFL debut a few months ago. However, she lacks the experience that Kaufman has, and I expect Kaufman to have another standout performance in what should be a mismatch.
- Speaking of mismatches, another one sees Cooper III take on Howard. Cooper III is 5-1 overall in PFL including two knockout wins over Jake Shields. Howard, on the other hand, is just 2-2-1 in PFL and just isn’t the fighter he once was. Cooper has incredible KO power and Howard’s chin is a huge question mark, so I expect Cooper to get the finish in this fight.
- One fight I’m excited for features Franca against Sy in a welterweight bout. Franca has won seven straight fights since being cut by the UFC following back-to-back decision losses to Gregor Gillespie and James Vick. Sy, meanwhile, is coming off of a 17-second TKO win over David Michaud. I’m intrigued by Sy’s knockout power but considering how dominant Franca has looked and how much experience he has, you have to favor him here to get the win.
