Another fight has been added to the upcoming UFC 229 supercard, and I’ll give my thoughts on this new matchup in today’s MMA odds and ends.
Alan Patrick vs. Scott Holtzman, UFC 229
A lightweight matchup between Alan Patrick and Scott Holtzman is the latest addition to UFC 229, which is set to take place Saturday, October 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout was reported by Combate and is expected to be officially confirmed by the UFC soon. Patrick (15-1) has an impressive UFC record of 5-1 and is currently riding a three-fight win streak. The problem? He barely fights. “Nuguette” has competed just once since 2016, a decision win over Damir Hadzovic earlier this year. Prior to that, he had beaten Stevie Ray and Damien Brown in 2016, with previous UFC victories over John Makdessi and Garett Whiteley in his first two UFC bouts, with his lone Octagon defeat coming to top-ranked Mairbeck Taisumov. Patrick is a very talented fighter, but for whatever reason he just can’t stay healthy.
Holtzman (11-2) has a solid UFC record of 4-2 and is presently riding a two-fight win streak with victories over Darrell Horcher and Michael McBride in his last two bouts. He also holds UFC wins over Cody Pfister and Anthony Christodoulou, with his UFC losses coming against Drew Dober and Josh Emmett. “Hot Sauce” is a former hockey enforcer and he really hasn’t lived up to the hype since coming to the UFC as he’s beaten the worst guys in the division and has lost when he’s stepped up in competition. Though both guys are on win streaks, I find Patrick’s win streak more impressive and overall I just feel like he’s the better fighter. I’m expecting a close line for this fight, but if I was making the odds I would definitely tend to favor Patrick to get the win here.
