UFC on FOX 30: Katlyn Chookagian vs. Alexis Davis Fight Breakdown

Katlyn Chookagian

Age: 29
Nationality: American
MMA Record: 10-1
UFC Record: 3-1
Notable Wins: Lauren Murphy, Sijara Eubanks
Notable Losses: Liz Carmouche
Last Fight: Decision win over Mara Romero Borella

Fighter Profile: A former bantamweight, Chookagian has looked good since dropping down to 125lbs, which is the weight class she should be competing at. Although she finished a number of fights on the regional scene, she’s mostly gone to decisions since entering the UFC and that didn’t help her stand out in the crowded pack of fighters at 135lbs. Now down at flyweight, though, she should have a much better chance of making a run for the belt. She’s young and well-rounded and should be able to improve and get better. We still haven’t seen her truly get tested in a fight so it’s hard to say how she will do if she gets matched up against someone with a real killer instinct, but for now she seems like someone who should be able to win some fights in the flyweight division.

Alexis Davis

Age: 33
Nationality: Canadian
MMA Record: 19-7
UFC Record: 6-3
Notable Wins: Amanda Nunes, Sarah Kaufman, Liz Carmouche, Jessica Eye, Valerie Letourneau
Notable Losses: Ronda Rousey, Sara McMann, Sarah Kaufman
Last Fight: Decision win over Liz Carmouche

Fighter Profile: One of the top bantamweights in the world, Davis recently made the drop down to flyweight and impressed by taking out Carmouche for the second time in her career. Davis is a very well-rounded fighter with excellent striking skills to go along with a solid ground game including strong top control and slick submissions. She is not the most durable fighter as she’s been finished a number of times in her career but she is definitely a very well-rounded fighter and she could make a run for the title at flyweight.

Fight Breakdown: Based on the style matchup I’m expecting a competitve bout that takes place primarily on the feet where both women excel. But I do think Davis has the advantage due to having a more varied striking attack. As well, if the fight does end up on the mat then I think Davis has the advantage there as well. Davis’ chin is always a concern but we haven’t seen much in the way of knockout power out of Chookagian so far in the UFC, and I think Davis is going to be able to outwork her and take home the decision.

Prediction: Alexis Davis via decision
