A pair of hot Mexican super featherweights are in action this Saturday night as Miguel Berchelt and Miguel Roman both return to action.
Roman (58-12) is facing veteran Aristides Perez (31-10-2) as he main events the Municipal Gym in his hometown of Juarez. Roman iss fighting on a very short turn around time as he is coming off a December 9th TKO win over well respected fellow countryman Orlando Salido. The fight is for a vacant WBC regional belt at 130 pounds as Roman is looking to keep the attention of the sanctioning body. Perez is a solid veteran who also took a loss in a May of 2017 fight to Orlando Salido. This fight is set to air on Televisa in Mexico and the fight card also counts on a WBC International flyweight title fight on the women’s side as Diana Laura Fernandez (16-2) takes on Noemi Bosques (11-10-2).
ESPN will be airing WBC world super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt’s latest title defense as he faces Maxwell Awuku. Berchelt won the world title from Francisco Vargas last year and he made a successful title defense against Takashi Miura this past July. For this fight Berchelt is returning to defend his belt in Mexico while he looks for big money fights in the United States. Awuku is a veteran of close to fifty fights but his resume is entirely in Africa until this point and it is doubtful he has seen anything Berchelt’s level. Berchelt has 28 KO’s and he has a lot of height and reach so he feels he is ready for more mainstream fights. Berchelt is getting airtime in the United States on ESPN for this one and a big performance is always something that affects future paydays. Berchelt is still hunting those paydays and it may be Awuku that pays for it.
The big name in the weight class is Vasyl Lomachenko and both men would relish the payday that fight should bring. The fact is that Berchelt and Roman could also be on a collision course later this year.
