MMA Odds and Ends for Tuesday: Herman Passes Drug Test, Cleared To Fight Gonzaga

Dave Herman Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer today e-mailed MMAoddsbreaker.com with the results of the recent drug test taken by Dave Herman The heavyweight tested negative for drugs and has been cleared to fight Gabriel Gonzaga at this weekend’s UFC 162 card. This is really good news for Herman as well as those backing him as far as a bet goes. Herman is an exceptionally talented athlete but his drug problems have likely slowed his career progress, as he’s lost his last three fights in a row. But now that he’s clean, hopefully we can see him finally live up to his potential, and Gonzaga is definitely the right guy for Herman to get back on track against. Herman is currently a +190 underdog, while Gonzaga is a -250 favorite. At the current odds, I really do favor Herman and I believe he’s worth throwing a little bit of cash on. Rousey vs. Tate Booked For UFC 168 UFC president Dana White today announced that Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate will meet on the upcoming UFC 168 card, which, according to MMAjunkie.com, takes place December 28 in Las Vegas, NV. It’s not yet known if Rousey vs. Tate will be the main event of the evening or if it will be the co-main event, but either way expect it to play a prominent role in the promotion of the UFC’s annual year-end event. There is no betting line available for this bout yet but expect that to be released in the coming weeks now that a date has been announced the matchup. I’m guessing Rousey will open around -800 with the comeback on Tate being +600, and it will be interesting to see where the public eventually takes it. Mulhern vs. Couture Added To UFC 164 The UFC today announced that Quinn Mulhern has decided to drop down to lightweight and he’ll make his 155-pound debut against Ryan Couture at UFC 164, which takes place August 31 at Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI. It’s expected that the loser of this fight will be released by the UFC. This is a pretty interesting matchup between two former Strikeforce fighters who like to grapple. The x-factor is of course the fact that Mulhern is dropping down to 155, where he should be one of the biggest fighters in the entire division. That being said, Couture is very tough and if he can survive Mulhern’s submission attempts he can definitely make things interesting. The fight will likely open as a Pick ’em and although I do favor Couture a bit, I’ll probably just pass because neither of these guys should be trusted with anyone’s money at this point.
