Any weekend featuring a UFC pay-per-view will likely see that card get the majority of the attention. However, Bellator 184 on Friday night features a main event which is undoubtedly one of the best fights of the weekend. The Bellator bantamweight title will be on the line as Eduardo Dantas looks for his fifth successful defense of the belt he has held more than anyone in promotional history.
His task will not be an easy one however, as his opponent will be a fighter who has looked phenomenal throughout his career, save for a single slip-up in a fight he was otherwise dominating. Darrion Caldwell has had high expectations since he made the transition to MMA, and this is his opportunity to fully realize his potential.
The main card also features a pair of former featherweight champions looking to hold their spot at the top of the division against some up-and-comers. Five of Daniel Straus’ last seven fights have been for the featherweight title, but he’ll need to adjust to a three-rounder against Emmanuel Sanchez — who has gained a reputation for winning close fights — if he wants to get back to a sixth title bout.
The other former champ is Pat Curran, who hasn’t been as steady a fixture in the title picture lately, due in large part to inactivity and injuries. However, he brings a two-fight winning streak into his bout against John Teixeira, who has managed a 4-1 record in the Bellator cage thus far.
The final main card bout at Bellator 184 features the only fighter to defeat Darrion Caldwell. Joe Taimanglo has a tough draw in Leandro Higo however, as Higo was viewed highly enough by Bellator to be offered a title shot (albeit as a short notice replacement) in his organizational debut. Unfortunately he missed weight and ended up losing a split decision to Dantas, but wins for each of them could set up a return match.
