MMA Odds and Ends for Friday: Demetrious Johnson vs Ray Borg main event off

UFC 215 loses main event

Demetrious Johnson will have to wait a little bit longer to make history. His opponent Ray Borg pulled out of the UFC 215 main event flyweight title bout late last night due to an illness which has been bothering him all week. The fight will likely be rebooked for a future date once Borg is healthy again.

The co-main event women’s bantamweight title fight between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko is the new main event.

UFC released a statement on the cancellation:

“Due to a viral illness to UFC flyweight contender Ray Borg, the main event bout against champion Demetrious Johnson at UFC 215 has been cancelled. Borg was deemed unfit to compete by the UFC medical team.

UFC 215, which is now headlined by the women’s bantamweight championship between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko, will proceed as scheduled with 11 bouts at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Canada. Moving to the Pay-Per-View main card will be the flyweight bout between Henry Cejudo and Wilson Reis. Additionally, the Mitch Clarke and Alex White lightweight contest will now kick off the FS1 prelims.

With the removal of Johnson vs. Borg, customers may request a full refund of purchased tickets at point of sale.”

Donald Cerrone vs Darren Till booked for UFC Poland

Darren Till is about to get a major step up in competition as he’s expected to square off against former lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone October 21st at UFC Fight Night 118 in Gdansk, Poland. Till is undefeated and has gone 3-0-1 inside the Octagon. Cerrone is coming off consecutive losses to Robbie Lawler and Jorge Masvidal, but is still ranked the number six welterweight in the world. Despite Cerrone’s losing streak, look for “Cowboy” to open as a decent favorite in this bout. The announced fight card for the event was posted in yesterday’s Odds and Ends.

Tim Elliott vs Justin Scoggins booked for UFC on Fox 26

A flyweight bout between Tim Elliott and Justin Scoggins is slated to take place December 16th in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for UFC on Fox 26. Elliott is coming off a first round submission loss to Ben Nguyen in his last bout while Scoggins returned to the flyweight division this past June and was submitted in the second round against Ulka Sasaki in a fight he was dominating. Both men are potential contenders in the division and need to make an impression in this fight. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Scoggins open as the betting favorite here.

Here’s the announced card thus far for UFC on Fox 26:

205 lbs: Antônio Rogério Nogueira vs. Jared Cannonier
185 lbs: Alessio Di Chirico vs. Oluwale Bamgbose
185 lbs: Vitor Miranda vs. Julian Marquez
125 lbs: Tim Elliott vs. Justin Scoggins
