Mixed Martial Arts Veteran Recap: August 2017

At the beginning of every month, I feature my recurring “Veteran Watch” article, which takes a look at some notable veterans competing on the regional/overseas circuit. In this article, I recap how these veteran fighters fared in their respective bouts for the month of August.

LFA 18 – August 4th (Shawnee, Oklahoma)


Chris Kelades def. Tyler Shinn via Unanimous Decision
Former UFC flyweight Kelades earned his first win since August 2015 and competed for the first time since April 2016. Shinn had his two-fight win streak snapped. 

Mike Jackson (0-1) vs. Rafael Justino (2-1) 
Bout cancelled per Tapology

CFFC 66 – August 5th (Atlantic City, New Jersey)

Jonavin Webb def. Cody Wilson via Unanimous Decision
UFC veteran Webb now has back-to-back victories while Wilson lost his third straight fight. 

CES 45 – August 11th (Lincoln, Rhode Island)

Juliano Coutinho def. Ashley Gooch via TKO (Punches) at 4:18, RD. 2 
Gooch has now lost back-to-back fights while Coutinho captured the CES heavyweight title. 

Rebel FC 5: Quest for Glory – August 12th (Las Vegas, NV)

Andy Wang def. Makoto Maeda via Unanimous Decision
Adriano Bably def. Andy Wang via Unanimous Decision

TUF 5 competitor Wang earned his first win since 2009, coming out with a unanimous decision over Maeda. He would later meet Bably in the finals, where he would lose by unanimous decision. Bably earned his third straight win in the process. 

Aspera FC 55 – August 12th (Parana, Brazil)

Maiquel Falcão def. José Rodrigo Guelke via Unanimous Decision
Bellator/UFC veteran Falcao gets back on the winning track by taking home a unanimous decision over Guelke in 231-pound catchweight bout. Guelke dropped to 2-3 in his last five fights.

Paulo Bueno def. Ivan Jorge via TKO (injury) 

Bueno extended his winning streak to seven-straight while Jorge has now lost three of his last four fights. 

Alberto Uda def. Andre Francisco via Submission RD. 1
Former UFC middleweight Uda comes away with his fourth straight win while Francisco suffered the first loss in his career. 

Iliarde Santos def. Rafael de Abreu via TKO
Santos snapped a two-fight skid while de Abreau dropped his second straight fight.

Titan FC 45 – August 18th (Pembroke Pines, Florida)


Valdir Araujo def. Adriano Capitulino via Unanimous Decision
TUF 21 contestant Araujo earns his second straight victory and has won four of his last five fights. Meanwhile, Capitulino suffered just the second loss of his career.

ACB 67: Berkhamov vs Cooper – August 19th (Gronzy, Chechnya)

Mukhamed Berkhamov def. Brett Cooper via KO (Punch) in RD. 2 
Former Bellator title challenger Cooper had his two-fight win streak snapped. Berkhamov has now won 11 fights in a row. 

Pancrase 289 – August 20th (Tokyo, Japan)

Nobuki Fujii def. Richie Vaculik via Submission at 3:42, RD. 1 
Fujii earned his fourth straight win while UFC veteran Vaculik has now lost four of his last five fights.

Fight Nights Global 72 – August 24th (Sochi, Russia)


Josh Hill def. Grachik Engibaryan via Submission (Choke) at 4:12, RD. 1 
Former WSOF title challenger Hill has now won two straight fights. Meanwhile, Engibaryan has won four of his last five fights, with all of those victories coming by stoppage.

LFA 20 – August 25th (Prior Lake, Minnesota)


Kelly Kobold vs. Christine Stanley (Ends in Split Draw) 

Elite XC veteran Kobold returned to the cage for the first time since October 2008 and earned the first draw of her career. Stanley, meanwhile, is now winless in her last three fights.

Dual Combat Sports – August 25th (Detroit, Michigan)

Melvin Guillard (32-18-2) vs. Dequan Townsend (16-7) 
Bout cancelled per Tapology.
