UFC officials announced Thursday that Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight title against Ray Borg at UFC 215 in Edmonton on September 9th. In addition, the co-main event will pit women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes against Valentina Shevchenko in a rematch.
Johnson (26-2-1) will look break Anderson Silva’s record for most consecutive title defenses in this championship showdown. The 30-year-old is on a 12-fight win streak and hasn’t lost since a 2011 unanimous decision setback to Dominick Cruz at UFC on Versus 6.
Borg (11-2) heads into this title fight having won five of his last six fights, including back-to-back decision wins over Louis Smolka and Jussier Formiga. The Jackson/Winklejohn product has struggled on the scale, however, as two of his last four fights were at a catchweight due to him missing the flyweight (126-pound) limit.
Nunes (14-4) was originally slated to defend her bantamweight title against Shevchenko at UFC 213 earlier this month, but an illness hours before the card cancelled the fight. The American Top Team standout captured the title defeating Miesha Tate last year at UFC 200 and followed that up with a TKO victory over Ronda Rousey at UFC 207 in December.
Shevchenko (14-2) has won back-to-back fights since losing to Nunes last year at UFC 196, including a submission victory over Julianna Peña at UFC on FOX 23 in January. The 29-year-old has gone 3-1 in the UFC.
