Nearly 20 years after starting his combat sports career, Mark Hunt is finally making his first MMA appearance in his native New Zealand at UFC Fight Night 110 on June 10, 2017. The “Super Samoan” has traversed the rest of the globe during a career spent almost entirely within the confines of the UFC and PRIDE, several times competing in his adopted Australia, but this should be something special for Hunt. At 43 years old, this could also mark the end of a career full of nearly as much lore as accomplishment.
In typical Hunt fashion, he’s accepted one of the most difficult tasks available in this fight. Derrick Lewis continues to defy expectations, as his now six-fight win streak has lifted him into the Top 10 in the UFC’s heavyweight division. A win over Hunt would be his biggest yet, and it would also help his case for a title shot in the near future.
Keeping the local theme, an even more surprising fighter than Lewis occupies one half of the main event. Aussie Dan Kelly was originally brought into the UFC through the TUF Nations show, and not much was expected of the aged Judoka whose body already seemed to have given up on him. Seven Octagon appearances later, Kelly is one of the best stories in MMA, holding a 6-1 UFC record, including a victory in March over former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans.
Kelly snuck his way into the Top 15 at middleweight with the win over Evans, and he will have a chance to improve that standing when he faces eighth-ranked Derek Brunson. While Brunson has suffered two straight defeats — to Anderson Silva and Robert Whittaker — he has faced a higher level of competition than Kelly and seems to have significant physical advantages heading into this bout. Prior to those defeats, he was also in the midst of a five-fight winning streak of his own.
The main card of UFC Fight Night 110 also features a lightweight bout between Daniel Hooker and longtime UFC mainstay Ross Pearson. In the light heavyweight division Henrique da Silva remains busy, taking his fifth UFC bout just six days after his one-year anniversary with the promotion, as he has been re-booked against Ion Cutelaba. Action-oriented flyweights Tim Elliott and Ben Nguyen will trade leather, as both look to add to their recent UFC wins. Finally, Alex Volkanovski will be hoping to follow up on an extremely impressive UFC debut against Japanese veteran Mizuto Hirota.
In addition, the Auckland card also features a six-fight preliminary card ,which includes former flyweight title challenge John Moraga. MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas opened the betting odds for the full UFC Fight Night 110 card today at Several Bookmakers…
