MMA Odds and Ends for Friday: Jon Fitch vs. Brian Foster set for Professional Fighters League inaugural event

The Professional Fighters League (formally World Series of Fighting) announced in a press release Thursday that it will be hosting its first event on June 30th (PFL: Daytona) following the Firecracker 250 NASCAR XFINITY Series race.

In the main event, former WSOF welterweight champion Jon Fitch will battle Brian Foster. In addition, Smealinho Rama squares off with Ronny Markes in a light heavyweight bout, João Zeferino faces Herman Terrado at 170 pounds and lightweight Jason High takes on Caros Fodor. The event will be televised on NBC Sports Network.

Fitch (29-7-1) was the last welterweight champion for WSOF, as he won the title in April 2016 after defeating Zeferino at WSOF 30. The AKA product followed that up with a unanimous-decision win over Jake Shields at WSOF 34 in his last fight. The 39-year-old has won five of his last six fights.

Foster (28-9) returns to the welterweight division for the first time since January 2015 and has won three of his last four fights. The WSOF lightweight tournament winner is coming off a first-round submission victory against Luiz Firmino at WSOF 33 in October. This is a five-round fight with no title on the line, however, the winner will become the No. 1 seed for the PFL’s welterweight division.

Rama (9-2) heads into this matchup off a second-round TKO win over Jake Heun at WSOF 34. The 25-year-old Canadian will be competing for the second straight fight at light heavyweight. Markes (16-5) is coming off a first-round submission loss to Viktor Nemkov at M-1 Challenge 77 and has dropped four of his last six fights. The 29-year-old hasn’t competed under the WSOF banner since 2014.
