Here is my parlay:
Middleweight bout: Antonio Carlos Junior (-225) vs. Eric Spicely (+185)
Gabe’s Thoughts: I think they may cancel each other out on the mat, but ACJ has an advantage on the feet, and I see him finding success in keeping the fight there. I think he is capable of outgrappling and potentially submitting Spicely, considering Sam Alvey was able to earn a tapout victory over him in what was Spicely’s Octagon debut. Both 185-pounders are red-hot now heading into this bout in Rio de Janeiro, where the Brazilian Carlos Junior will have the home advantage. I think he is capable of winning this fight on the mat, but I see things playing out on the feet, where I expect him to outpoint Spicely over the course of three rounds to pick up a unanimous decision win on the judges’ scorecards and potentially secure a T/KO stoppage along the way. He could also drop him and take his back and sink in a choke. I see ACJ having more routes to victory in this contest, and I think he is worth playing at the current price.
Gabe’s Call: ACJ by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)
Welterweight bout: Luan Chagas (-255) vs. Jim Wallhead (+215)
Gabe’s Thoughts: Chagas is coming off a submission loss to Erick Silva and will be looking to return to the win column by taking out Wallhead, who lost a controversial split decision to Jessin Ayari in his promotional debut. I think this is a solid matchup at 170-pounds, and I do think it is one that favors the Brazilian, who will have the home advantage heading in. The main question is if Chagas has improved his cardio, and I am betting that he has. It was the only reason he lost to Silva, as he dominated him in the first round. If his cardio fails him again, I can see Wallhead taking over in the second round and squeezing by with a decision. However, I think Chagas will have enough in the tank for at least two good rounds. It may not even be necessary, as he generally comes out strong in the opening frame and always has a good chance of putting his opponents away.
Gabe’s Call: Chagas by T/KO (strikes, 1:13 round 1)
Gabe’s Recommended Parlay: ACJ (-225) and Chagas (-255) at +101
