Mixed Martial Arts Veteran Recap: May 2017

At the beginning of every month, I feature my recurring “Veteran Watch” article, which takes a look at some notable veterans competing on the regional/overseas circuit. In this article, I recap how these veteran fighters fared in their respective bouts for the month of May.

LFA 11: Frincu vs. Madrid – May 5th (Phoenix, Arizona)

James Nakashima def. LaRue Burley via Unanimous Decision 
Nakashima remained undefeated in his career while Burley has now lost three of his last four fights. 

Ganryujima: Way of the Samurai 2017 in Maihama – May 6th (Uraysau, Japan)

Michihiro Omigawa def. Jairo Kusunoki via TKO (Injury) *Custom Rules bout* 
Former UFC featherweight Omigawa has now gone 3-1 in his fourth straight “Custom Rules” bout. 

Cage Warriors 83 – May 6th (Newport, Wales)

Lewis Long def. Che Mills via TKO (Injury) at 0:18, RD. 1 
Long has now won eight of his last nine fights while Mills has now lost three straight. 

Shooto – May 12th (Tokyo, Japan)

Reuben Duran (11-6-1) vs. Taiki Tsuchiya (14-7) 
Bout cancelled per Tapology. 

BAMMA 29: McDermott Vs. Wolf – May 12th (Birmingham, England)

Daniel Crawford def. Ronnie Mann via TKO (Punches) at 3:28, RD. 1
Crawford has now won three in a row while Mann has lost three of his last four fights. 

Stellar Fights 34 – May 13th (Harrington, Delaware)

Richard Patishnock (6-4) vs. Piankhi Zimmerman (3-2) 
Bout cancelled per Tapology. 

ACB 60: Aguev vs Devent – May 13th (Vienna, Austria)

Ismail Naurdiev def. Benny Alloway via KO (Kick) at 2:24, RD. 1 
Three-time UFC veteran Alloway had his two-fight win streak snapped while Naurdiev has now won 11 fights in a row. 

Octogone: 1st Edition – May 13th (Marselle, France)

Mickael Lebout def. Rashad Muradov via Unanimous Decision 
Lebout earned his second straight win while Muradov lost for the first time in his last three fights. 

M-1 Challenge 77: Nemkov vs Marques – May 19th (Sochi, Russia)

Viktor Nemkov def. Ronny Markes via Submission, RD. 1 
Markes dropped to 2-4 in his last six fights while Nemkov has won six of his last seven matchups. 

Titan FC 44: Torres vs. Sharipov – May 19th (Pembroke Pines, Florida) 

Kurt Holobaugh def. Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante via TKO (Punches) at 2:45, RD. 4
Holobaugh has now won three straight fights while Cavalcante is now 1-2 in his last three. 

ACB 61: Balaev vs. Bataev – May 20th (St. Petersberg, Russia)

Albert Tumenov def. Ismael de Jesus via KO (Punch) at 0:46, RD. 1
Tumenov snapped his two-fight skid while late replacement Jesus hds his three-fight win streak snapped. 

Luis Palomino def. Marcos Schmitz via Unanimous Decision 
WSOF/Bellator vet Palomino earned his second straight win while Schmitz had his four-fight win streak snapped. 

PLMMA 73 – May 20th (Poland) 

Matt Horwich def. Piotr Siwkowski via TKO (Elbows) at 1:20, RD. 1 
UFC/Bellator and IFL veteran Horwich earned back-to-back wins for the first time since 2012 while Siwkowski has now lost two of his last three fights. 

World Fighting Championship Akhmat 36: Battle in Grozny – May 21st (Gronzy, Russia) 

Frodo Khasbulaev def. Genair da Silva via KO (Punch) at 3:58, RD. 2
Former Bellator lightweight tournament champion Khasbulaev earned his fourth win in his last five fights while da Silva dropped to 15-6. 

Alexandre Bezerra (19-5) vs. Salman Zhamaldaev (13-1)
Bout cancelled per Tapology. 

Beslan Ushukov def. Ildemar Alcântara via Split Decision
Alcantara has now lost four in a row while Ushukov earned his fifth straight win.

Magomed Ankalaev def. Wagner Prado via TKO (Punches) at 3:33, RD. 1 
UFC veteran Prado had his four-fight win streak snapped while Ankalaev improved to 9-0 overall. 

Zelimkhan Umiev def. Virgil Zwicker via Submission (Kimura) at 1:14, RD. 1 
Umiev earned his fifth straight win by stoppage while Zwicker has now lost two of his last three fights. 

Shamrock FC 289 – May 20th (Kansas City, Missouri)

Zak Bucia def. Bobby Voelker via Unanimous Decision (won Shamrock FC welterweight title) 
Bucia has now won back-to-back fights and the Shamrock FC welterweight title. Voelker fell for the first time since leaving the UFC, as his five-fight win streak came to a halt. 

ONE Championship: Dynasty of Heroes – May 26th ( Kallang, Singapore)

Ben Askren def. Agilan Thangalapani via Submission (Choke) at 2:20, RD. 1
Askren improved his record to 16-0 while Thangalapani lost for the first time in his career.  

M4TC 24: Throwdown – May 27th (Tyne and Wear, England)

Colin Fletcher def. Jordan Miller via Submission (Choke) RD. 1 
Fletcher has now won two of his last three fights while Miller has lost five in a row. 

KSW 39: Colosseum  – May 27th (Warsaw, Poland) 

Mateusz Gamrot def. Norman Parke via Unanimous Decision 
Gamrot kept his undefeated record intact with his 13th straight win while Parke had his two-fight win streak snapped. 

Pancrase 287 – May 28th (Tokyo, Japan)

Shintaro Ishiwatari def. Rafael Silva via Unanimous decision
Silva has his six-fight win streak snapped while Ishiwatari earns his fourth win in a row 

Hiroshige Tanaka def. Hatsu Hioki via TKO at 0:14, RD. 1 
Tanaka has now won back-to-back fights while Hioki lost for the first time in his last three fights.
