It wouldn’t be a fitting New Year’s Eve without some wild Japanese MMA spectable, and that’s exactly what new promotion Rizin will offer tomorrow (Saturday, December 31, 2016) with the semifinals of the openweight Grand Prix. The event is headlined by the finals of the openweight Grand Prix, which has yet to be announced, because the semifinals will also be taking place earlier on the same night. Betting odds were already released for the featherweight battle between grappling wizard Kron Gracie and veteran Japanese fighter Tatsuya Kawajiri, and the only remaining fights to receive odds will be the semifinals, which feature one big name in particular: Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. Filipovic stamped his way to the semifinals less than 48 hours ago, earning a TKO victory over “King Mo” Lawal in the second round of their contest at Rizin 3 on December 23rd. He’ll be matched up opposite Baruto Kaito, a 3-0 heavyweight with a sumo background. The other half of the semifinals features undefeated fighters Amir Aliakbari against Valentin Moldavsky. Aliakbari (4-0) earned a decision victory over veteran Heath Herring in the quarterfinals, who had come out of retirement on short notice for the tournament. Moldavsky (6-0) punched his ticket to the semifinals with a pair of unanimous decision wins. MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas opened the betting lines for the semifinal bouts of the event today at Several Bookmakers.
