Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Vegas 102 Opening Odds:

  • The main event of UFC Vegas 102 is a five-round middleweight bout between Jared Cannonier and Gregory Rodrigues. Cannonier is a former title challenger but has fallen on hard times with losses in his last two fights. As for Rodrigues, he has won his last three fights and he is starting to look like a major title contender in the middleweight division. While Cannonier has had an amazing career, he does appear to be on the decline at age 40. Rodrigues certainly has holes in his game but given his youth advantage and more momentum heading into this bout, he has a good shot of taking the win here.
  • In the co-main event, we have Youssef Zalal taking on Calvin Kattar. Zalal has been red hot since he re-joined the UFC, winning all three of his fights by submission and looking like a serious threat for the top 15. As for Kattar, he has been a longtime stalwart in the rankings but he has struggled in recent years and has lost his last three fights in a row. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to back Kattar here despite all of the previous success he’s had in the UFC. Not surprisingly, Zalal is the favorite here, which makes sense given his recent hot streak.
