Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC 309 Opening Odds:
- The main event of UFC 309 sees UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones defend his title against former champion Stipe Miocic. Jones has not fought since last March when he submitted Ciryl Gane in his only heavyweight bout. Before that, he had won all but one of his fights in the UFC light heavyweight division. As for Miocic, he has not fought in over three years since he was knocked out by Francis Ngannou in March 2021. This should be a great fight between two of the best UFC fighters of all time, but it’s hard not to favor Jones, who essentially is undefeated in his MMA career save for one controversial DQ defeat in 2009.
- The co-main event is a five-round lightweight bout between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler. Oliveira is coming off a split decision loss to No. 1 contender Armen Tsaurkyan earlier this year at UFC 300 but remains one of the top lightweights in the sport. Chandler has not fought in two years since he was submitted by Dustin Poirier, having taken time off while waiting for a Conor McGregor superfight that never materialized. Although Chandler has a puncher’s chance, Oliveira is more well-rounded and deserves to be the favorite here.
