Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC 302 Opening Odds:
- The main event of UFC 302 features UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev against Dustin Poirier. Makhachev has won his last 13 fights in a row and has been utterly dominant for most of the fights, including a KO win via head kick over Alexander Volkanovski in his last outing. As for Poirier, he is coming off a brutal knockout win over Benoit Saint Denis in his last fight to earn what may very well be his last title shot in the UFC. Although Makhachev is a huge favorite here, and rightfully so, Poirier for sure has a puncher’s chance against anyone.
- The co-main event of UFC 302 is a five-round middleweight bout between Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa. Strickland is coming off a split decision loss to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297 where he lost the UFC middleweight title, so he will be eager to bounce back here and get his belt back. As for Costa, he is coming off a decision loss to Robert Whittaker at UFC 298 earlier this year, and he has lost three of his last four fights overall. Costa has knockout power, but Strickland is the superior fighter and it makes total sense that he is the betting favorite here.
