Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC 291:
- The main event features a rematch between top lightweight contenders Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje for the vacant BMF title. These two fighters previously met in 2018, with Poirier winning that fight by fourth-round knockout. Since then, both men have competed for the UFC lightweight championship, but neither could take home the belt. Now they meet in a rematch for the BMF title, which was vacated by former welterweight star Jorge Masvidal. Both Poirier and Gaethje are coming off of wins, over Michael Chandler and Rafael Fiziev, and this rematch should be a ridiculously fun fight. The first fight was competitive, but Poirier took the victory. That’s why it makes sense to see him open up as a small favorite for this BMF title rematch.
- The co-main event sees former light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz take on former middleweight champion Alex Pereira. Blachowicz is coming off of a draw against Magomed Ankalaev, while Pereira was knocked out by Israel Adesanya in his last fight and he moved up in weight for this bout. It will be interesting to see how Pereira does in his new weight class. The oddsmakers opened up Blachowicz as a small favorite, but it’s only a slight lean.
