Here are my quick thoughts on the PFL 2023: Week 1:
- The main event of the first PFL event of 2023 is a featherweight bout between Brendan Loughnane and Marlon Moraes. Loughnane won a million dollars last year after winning four fights, including a knockout over Bubba Jenkins to win the featherweight tournament. As for Moraes, he is making his second PFL appearance in this fight after losing by knockout to Sheymon Moraes in his last outing. He also lost five of his last six fights by knockout in the UFC. Moraes was a great fighter for many years, but his chin is completely gone at this point. Moraes has a puncher’s chance, but Loughnane is the much better fighter at this point in time.
- In the co-main event, light heavyweights Rob Wilkinson and Thiago Santos clash. Wilkinson won the tournament last year with four straight wins, including a knockout victory over Omari Akhmedov in the championship. As for Santos, he is making his PFL debut after leaving the UFC. He lost five of his last six fights in the UFC, but he was fighting elite competition. Wilkinson has more momentum right now and he’s looked amazing in the PFL, but Santos is a very experienced fighter and he shouldn’t be counted out of this fight.
