Here are my quick thoughts on PFL Challenger Series 2023: Week 5:
- Headlining this PFL card is a women’s flyweight bout between Kaytlin Neil and Katherine Corogenes. Neil was a cast member on TUF 30, where she beat Helen Peralta in the house before losing to Juliana Miller, the eventual winner. Neil was not signed to the UFC and instead re-joined Invicta FC, where she beat Hannah Guy. After picking up that win, PFL picked up Neil and she has the potential to do something special for the promotion. Originally, Neil was set to fight Chelsea Hackett, but the fight was changed after Hackett had to withdraw, with Corogenes filling in on short notice. Corogenes has fought once for PFL, where she lost via knockout to top prospect Dakota Ditcheva in her last fight. Given that she is now stepping up on short notice, this looks like a tough fight for her to win, and Neil is the clear favorite here.
- Also on the card is a women’s flyweight bout between Sandra Lavado and Shanna Young. Lavado has a nice record but she hasn’t really fought anyone of note and it’s hard to say how good she actually is. As for Young, she is coming to PFL after her stint in the UFC where she went 1-3 overall in the promotion. Although Young didn’t perform well in the UFC, that experience should give her an edge here in her PFL debut against Lavdao.
