Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Vegas 55 Opening Odds:
- The main event of UFC Vegas 55 is a five-round women’s bantamweight bout between former champion Holly Holm and challenger Ketlen Vieira. Holm has not fought since October 2020 when she won a dominant decision over top contender Irene Aldana. She defeated Raquel Pennington in her fight before that, with her last loss coming to Amand Nunes in July 2019. Although she’s 40 years old, Holm is still one of the top fighters in the division. With her mix of striking acumen to go along with underrated wrestling skills, she can still be an effective fighter this late into her combat sports career. As for Vieira, she is a full 10 years younger at age 30. She is coming off of a decision over Miesha Tate in her last fight where she outstruck her opponent to get the win. I’m not sure she can do that versus Holm, hence Holm being favored.
- Also on the card is an exciting welterweight bout between Santiago Ponzinibbio and Michel Pereira. Ponzinibbio is just 1-2 since returning to the UFC in 2021 following a three-year layoff, but he remains a dangerous striker. Pereira, meanwhile, has won his last four fights. Although Ponzinibbio is a solid veteran, the much-younger Pereira could be catching him a good time.
