Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Vegas 53 Opening Odds:
- The main event of UFC Vegas 53 is a five-round non-title bantamweight bout between top-10 contenders Rob Font and Marlon Vera. Font is coming off of a decision loss to Jose Aldo last December, which snapped a four-fight win streak for the knockout artist. Despite the loss to Aldo, Font remains ranked in the top five of the division, and a win over Vera would keep him in title contention. Vera, meanwhile, is ranked at No. 8 in the division after knocking out Frankie Edgar in his last fight. Vera has won three of his last four fights overall, with his lone loss in that stretch also coming against Aldo. This fight between Font and Vera should be very competitive while it lasts. Font opened up as the betting favorite, but don’t count out Vera.
- In the co-main event, it’s a heavyweight bout between Andrei Arlovski and Jake Collier. Arlovski took this fight on short notice, replacing the injured Justin Tafa. Despite being 43 years old, Arlovski is still fighting at a high level, having won five of his last six fights. Collier, meanwhile, is coming off of a submission win over Chase Sherman. Collier is a very skilled fighter, but Arlovski’s edge in experience and conditioning makes him the betting favorite here.
