Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Vegas 47 Opening Odds:

  • The main event should be a really fun fight between top-10 ranked middleweights as Sean Strickland takes on Jack Hermansson. Strickland has been on a roll as of late, having won five straight fights including four straight wins at 185lbs. Strickland is 30 years old, in the prime of his career, and a win over Hermansson would catapult him into the middleweight division’s elite. That being said, Hermansson won’t make it easy. The Swede is coming off of a big win over Edmen Shahbazyan and overall he has won two of his last three fights. Although Hermansson is the higher-ranked fighter, it’s actually Strickland who opened as the favorite, likely due to his recent form and also due to his emerging popularity among fight fans.
  • Also on the card is another fun middleweight fight between Punahele Soriano and Nick Maximov. Soriano is coming off of a tough decision loss to Brendan Allen in a war, but he had won his other two UFC fights by knockout prior to that defeat. As for Maximov, he defeated Cody Brundage by decision in his UFC debut. Soriano has the explosive KO power early on, but Maximov — who trains with the Diaz brothers — has a solid gas tank and grappling skills.
