Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Vegas 40 Opening Odds:
- The main event of UFC Vegas 40 is a five-round women’s featherweight bout between Aspen Ladd and Norma Dumont. Ladd was supposed to fight two weeks ago against Macy Chiasson, but she missed weight and the fight was scrapped. The UFC told Ladd that she had to move up to 145lbs and she will make her Octagon debut in the weight class this weekend against Dumont. Like Ladd, Dumont was a big bantamweight who could no longer make 135lbs. After moving up to featherweight, she beat Felicia Spencer and emerged as a title contender in a shallow division. This should be a competitive fight and the fact it was booked on short notice and under bizarre circumstances makes it a tough one to call. But with Ladd being the bigger name as well as the more proven UFC fighter, she opened up as the betting favorite for it.
- The co-main event features Andrei Arlovski against Carlos Felipe in a heavyweight bout. Incredibly, there is a 16-year age gap between the two fighters, with Arlovski being born in 1979 and Felipe being born in 1995. Both fighters have won three of their last four fights, so they are both hot, but anytime there is an age gap that big, the younger fighter has an edge.
