Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Vegas 39 Opening Odds:
- The main event of UFC Vegas 39 is a five-round women’s strawweight bout between Mackenzie Dern and Marina Rodriguez. The 28-year-old Dern is 6-1 overall in the UFC and she is currently riding a four-game winning streak, including a submission win over Nina Nunes earlier this year. Aside from a loss to Amanda Ribas two years ago, Dern has looked phenomenal in the UFC and appears to be a title contender for years to come. As for Rodriguez, the 34-year-old Brazilian is 4-1-2 overall in the UFC and is coming off of back-to-back wins over Michelle Waterson and the aforementioned Ribas. Although I understand Dern opening as the favorite here due to her youth and her nasty submission game, Rodriguez is absolutely a live dog in this fight given her striking, improved takedown defense, and cardio.
- The co-main event features Randy Brown against Jared Gooden in a welterweight bout. Brown is just 7-4 overall in the UFC but he is coming off of a submission win over Alex Oliveira and overall he has won three of his last four fights by stoppage. As for Gooden, he knocked out Niklas Stolze to save his job in his last fight on short notice. Gooden has a puncher’s chance here, but Brown is the more well-rounded fighter and deserves to be favored.
