Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC Vegas 38 Opening Odds:
- The main event of UFC Vegas 38 is a light heavyweight bout between top-10 ranked contenders Thiago Santos and Johnny Walker. Santos is coming off of three straight losses, but he lost to Jon Jones, Glover Teixeira, and Aleksandar Rakic, so it’s hard to say if he’s on a steep decline or if he’s just fought really tough competition. As for Walker, he most recently knocked out Ryan Spann to bounce back after back-to-back losses to Nikita Krylov and Corey Anderson. Walker has KO power but he has shown some serious holes in his game, so it’s understandable why Santos opened up as the favorite here despite being the older fighter.
- The co-main event sees Kyle Daukaus and Kevin Holland go at it for three rounds or less at middleweight. Daukaus is just 1-2 overall in the UFC and he is coming off of a one-sided loss to Phil Hawes. As for Holland, he was emerging as a middleweight title contender before losing to Marvin Vettori and Derek Brunson. Daukaus will test Holland’s wrestling in this fight, but Holland is the more dangerous MMA fighter and likely should have opened as the favorite.
