Here are my quick thoughts on the UFC on ABC 2 Opening Odds:
- This is a phenomenal UFC card we have this weekend. It’s worth noting that the card starts at NOON ET on Saturday, so remember it’s an early card. In the main event, we have Marvin Vettori (16-3-1) talking on Kevin Holland (21-6). Holland is filling in on short notice for the injured Darren Till, taking the fight just three weeks after a lopsided loss to Derek Brunson. In that fight, Holland’s poor takedown defense was completely exposed and, at this point, the blueprint is out on how to beat him. Brunson was able to take Holland down at will and hold him on the mat for the majority of the 25 minutes to get the win. It’s hard not to remember how Holland showed no urgency to get up and was more focused on talking rather than fighting. Considering he had won five straight fights before that in an impressive fashion, the loss to Brunson was very disappointing and makes you reconsider his path going forward. As for Vettori, he’s coming off of a phenomenal win over Jack Hermansson that bumped him up into the top-10 of the UFC middleweight division. Despite taking that fight on short notice, Vettori went the full five rounds and looked great. He is a solid striker and has underrated wrestling skills, making him a tough out at 185lbs. As expected, Vettori opened as the favorite here.
- The co-main event is a fantastic fight between featherweights Arnold Allen (16-1) taking on Sodiq Yusuff (11-1). Allen is a perfect 7-0 in the UFC so far and he has been impressive in nearly all of his fights, showing solid striking and submission skills. However, one thing that bothers me about Allen is that he fights so infrequently, usually only once a year. Yusuff, meanwhile, is a perfect 4-0 himself in the UFC and he is coming off of a quality win over Andre Fili in his last fight. I think both Allen and Yusuff are excellent young fighters, but given that Yusuff has been more active in recent years, I am leaning towards him getting the win here.
- I also want to point out a welterweight bout between Daniel Rodriguez (13-2) and Mike Perry (14-7). This is my pick for “Fight of the Night” as both men love to stand in the pocket and throw bombs. Rodriguez is coming into this fight off of a decision loss to Nicolas Dalby, but prior to that, he had won three fights in the UFC. As for Perry, he has really struggled lately, losing three of his last four fights. I’m leaning towards Rodriguez at this Pick ’em price.
