And here are my initial thoughts on the UFC on ESPN+ 19 Opening Odds:
- The main event is an important women’s strawweight fight between Jedrzejczyk and Waterson that could very well see the winner fight champion Weili Zhang next. Jedrzejczyk is returning back to strawweight after losing to Valentina Shevchenko at flyweight. At one time a dominant champ at 115lbs, Jedrzejczyk has lost three of her last four fights. As for Waterson, she is on a three-fight win streak. This fight will likely take place on the feet where both women excel. Jedrzejczyk should be given the edge due to her volume and knockout power, but I wouldn’t completely count Waterson out of this fight. The line seems a bit too long for Jedrzejczyk considering she has struggled to get her hand raised in recent fights.
- The co-main event is an interesting matchup between Gracie and Swanson. This could very well be Gracie’s breakthrough fight. He’s a perfect 5-0 in MMA, with a submission win over Alex Caceres in his UFC debut earlier this year. He now takes on Swanson, who is far more experienced in the Octagon. Swanson’s four-fight losing streak is scary and will keep people away from betting on him, but I wouldn’t write him off just yet. If this fight stays standing Swanson should have the edge, and he has far more experience. This looks like a dog-or-pass situation to me.
- The Dern vs. Ribas matchup will also draw the interest of bettors. Dern is unbeaten at 7-0 in MMA including a 2-0 record in the Octagon. She hasn’t fought in over a year after having a child but now that she’s back she’s immediately a top flyweight contender. As for Ribas, she won her UFC debut against Emily Whitmire after a three-year layoff. This should be a competitive fight but I do favor Dern to get her hand raised.
- I’m also intrigued by the Anders vs. Meerschaert middleweight fight. After losing three straight fights, Anders finally picked up a KO over Vinicius Moreira in her last outing. As for Meerschaert, he’s very underrated and is coming off a nice win over Trevin Giles. I favor Anders but Meerschaert has pulled off his fair share of upsets over the years, so don’t sleep on him.
- And finally, it’s crazy that Vera vs. Ewell is opening up this card. Vera has looked incredible lately as he’s finished his last four opponents while Ewell is 2-1 in the UFC. Vera is a really sleeper at 135lbs and should win this fight.
