And here are my initial thoughts on the UFC Fight Night 147 Opening Odds:

  • The main event between Till and Masvidal should be a solid scrap between England’s favorite son and the enemy from America. I expect the fans to be fully behind Till for this fight and the judges could be swayed by them in this fight goes the full rounds like the Till vs. Stephen Thompson fight went. Skills wise I believe Masvidal actually matches up decently well with Till, but the problem is the size discrepancy. Till is basically a middleweight while Masvidal spent most of his career fighting at lightweight. When the skill is similar but the size difference is this pronounced, it’s hard not to back the bigger man in this matchup and that’s Till. The fact he’s fighting in England helps too, and he deserved to open as a solid favorite like he did.
  • The co-main event is a tough one to call and that’s why you see the opening line as a Pick ’em. Edwards has been running under the the radar at 170lbs for the past couple of years but anyone who has been following him closely knows just how talented he is. Nelson, meanwhile, has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career but he looked fantastic in his last fight against Alex Oliveira. It’s a very close fight to call between two well-rounded fighters, and the oddsmakers got the opening number for this one bang on.
  • In an important light heavyweight bout, Reyes is a sizeable favorite to beat Oezdemir and that seems about right. Although Oezdemir is a solid fighter with knockout power who has fought for the title, Reyes looks like the future of the division. This is a step up for Reyes but it’s a fight he can win and with the hype behind him the fact he opened as the favorite made sense.
  • Other favorites who should win their fights include Wood over Quinonez and Allen over Rinaldi. Both have extremely favorable matchups and fighting in England should give both a massive boost.
  • For underdogs, perhaps take a look at Heinisch. Though Breese has looked good in the UFC and will be fighting in his home country, Heinisch has looked amazing in his last few fights and is generally a guy who is undervalued at the books despite his success. I’d also take a deeper look at Roberts to beat Silva, who is usually the underdog in his fights.
