UFC on ESPN 5 took place Saturday, August 3, 2019 in Newark, New Jersey. The card was headlined by a welterweight matchup between former champions Colby Covington and Robbie Lawler.

Colby Covington put out a relentless pace over 25 minutes to win every minute of every round to win a unanimous decision Robbie Lawler. Covington closed -303 while Lawler closed +245

In a wild opening minute, Clay Guida hurt Jim Miller, but Miller countered with a strike of his own that wobbled “The Carpenter.” With Guida stunned, Miller sunk in a guillotine choke that put his opponent to sleep for a first-round victory. Miller closed -139 with the return on Guida +119

Nasrat Haqparast landed a thunderous left hand early in round two that sent Joaquim Silva crashing to the canvas to continue the strong run Haqparast has made in the UFC. Haqparast closed -435 while Silva closed +327

Scott Holtzman landed several big punches in the opening two rounds creating significant damage on Dong Hyun Ma’s left eye. After round two, the doctor took a look and called a stop to the bout. Holtzman closed -417. Ma closed +307

Antonina Shevchenko suffered a nasty elbow in round one, but came out well in round two to submit Lucie Pudilova. Shevchenko closed -159 with the return on Pudilova +133

Claudio Silva took Cole Williams to the mat early in round one and had no problem securing a rear naked choke to get the finish. Silva closed the biggest favorite on the card at -556 while Williams closed at +384

 

Underdogs that Won

Gerald Meerschaert was the grappler in this bout as he emphatically was able to force Trevin Giles to tap in the third round. Meerschaert closed +144. Giles closed -175

Darko Stosic was docked two points for illegal strikes which allowed Kennedy Nzechukwu to earn a decision victory. Nzechukwu closed +100 while Stosic closed -119

Mickey Gall was able to control the majority of three round to edge out a decision over Salim Touahri. Gall closed -103 while Touahri closed -119

Matt Schnell transferred a guillotine attempt into a triangle and was able to force Jordan Espinosa to tap in the opening round. Schnell closed +137. Espinosa closed -172

Lauren Murphy landed a beautiful knee in the clinch which sent Mara Romero Borella to the canvas. Murphy landed hammer fists on the mat to earn the TKO finish. Murphy closed +179 while Borella closed -222

Miranda Granger utilized her length well to land from distance and had a major advantage in the clinch to frustrate Hannah Goldy and win a clear decision. Granger closed -103 while Goldy closed -116
