Combate Americas recently held its 49th event in San Antonio, Texas on Friday. Here are the betting results of the fights, as explained by MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas.
Andre Barquero Morera opened -160 and closed +105
Eduardo Alvarado Osuna opened +130 and closed -125
This was an exciting fight that went deep into the final round. It looked like Osuna was winning, but Barquero Morera needed to do something significant in the last round and he did. Morera was able to sink in a rear naked choke to secure the win. The sportsbooks did very well on this fight because the public came in heavy on Osuna, flipping the line.
Nadine Mandiau opened +150 and closed -150
Melissa Cervantes opened -200 and closed +130
Mandiau was too big and just too much for Cervantes in her MMA debut. Credit to Combate for not giving gimme fights to fighters crossing over into MMA. Cervantes showed a lot of heart and could have quit while she was being outclassed over three rounds while losing a decision. I think Cervantes will have success if she drops down a weight class. The sportsbooks got hammered on this one as the line flipped and the public was correct in not buying the hype on Thunder Rosa. The line should have been closer.
Fernando Gonzalez Trevino opened -170 and closed -170
Cesar Arzamendia opened +140 and closed +145
In what turned out to be a very exciting fight, Trevino outstruck his opponent and defended takedowns to earn a decision victory. Trevino was the better fighter and the sportsbooks broke even thanks to two-way action on an appropriately set line.
Andy Perez opened +235 and closed +620
Ray Rodriguez opened -325 and closed -870
Andy Perez was game in this fight, holding top position at times, but Rodriguez picked up a submission in the third round. The public pushed Rodriguez heavy, piling up with him as one of their favorite parlay pieces and the sportsbooks took a beating on this fight.
Chris Cortez opened -220 and closed -210
Oscar Suarez opened +170 and closed +175
Suarez utilized his ground game here, securing an armbar against the active duty military veteran Cortez. There was two-way action with the sportsbooks earning a small win.
Peter Caballero opened -170 and closed -150
Justin Governale opened +140 and closed +130
This was a competitive fight where both fighters thought they won, but Caballero edged Governale out via split decision. The sportsbooks won decent on this fight as the public came in slightly mor eon Governale.
Jason Norwood opened -190 and closed -190
Jose Caceres opened +150 and closed +160
Jose Caceres, a former Titan FC champion, pulled off the shocker when he won all three rounds against a solid veteran in Norwood. The sportsbooks made a small profit on this fight.
Roy Sarabia opened -210 and closed -620
Carlos Melara opened +160 and closed +460
Melara was losing early as Sarabia dictated the first half of the first round, but Melara found an opening and reversed position. Melara opened up from top position and took over, finishing the fight with a rear naked choke. The betting public got destroyed here as they came in massive on Sarabia both straight and as a parlay option.
Overall, depending on where you bet and when sportsbooks opened their lines, some books took a loss and some won big for Combate Americas 49. The next Combate event is November 22 in Fresno, California.
