Combate Americas recently held its 40th event in Hidalgo, Texas on Friday. Here are the betting results of the primary fights, as explained by MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas.
In the main event, Palacios closed -816 with Cooper Gibson closing +461. Gibson looked strong from the beginning, holding his own on the feet and then working Palacios over with his superior ground game to win via arm triangle submission. The betting public got burned here because they pushed Palacios hard from his -375 opener.
Enrique Gonzalez closed -358, which wasn’t too far from his -325 opening lines against the underdog Alejandro Martinez. The bout was a competitive three round war, but Gonzalez won a closely contested split decision with the public and sportsbooks breaking even due to two-way action.
Paulina Vargas took on Desiree Yanez with Vargas opening a hefty -450 favorite. The public came in on Yanez, dropping Vargas to a -204 favorite. Vargas was winning the bout on the feet, but Yanez scored takedowns in rounds two and three, with the third round takedown badly injuring Vargas’ ankle and forcing a stop to the contest. Cee Jay Hamilton opened a huge -1100 favorite and was pushed all the way to -2000, with the comeback on DJ Fuentes +1000. Hamilton was too fast for Fuentes and walked away with a split decision in a bout where the public broke even with the sportsbooks.
Elias Rodriguez closed a -175 favorite with the comeback on Juan Gonzalez +136. Rodriguez started strong but faded and was finished in the second round. The sportsbooks made a small profit in this bout.
