We are four years removed from their second bout and both fighters have changed quite a bit.
Canelo started moving up weight classes and collecting titles one after another on his way to
becoming undisputed at super middleweight. While Golovkin has started to show his age over
the past several years, he is still very good and dangerous for anyone but his prime elite years
are behind him. Turning 40 years old in April and still fighting the best is a huge feat for anyone
and while he is not completely washed as a fighter Golovkin is starting to show depreciation in
speed and athleticism. His excellent boxing skills are still there along with his power jab and
dangerous right hook which has gained him tons of success over his storied career.
Canelo looks to have just now hit his prime in his boxing career and this past year to two has
definitely shown it. While he is coming off a loss to Bivol in May by decision, before that he was
just simply unstoppable as a fighter. Bivol was just too big and was unaffected by anything
Canelo tried to hit him with.
I am a huge fan of Golovkin like many others but I have to stay unbiased here in my prediction
and I cannot ignore the fact that Canelo was able to go toe to toe with Golovkin in both
matchups. While the decisions read in both fights are not popular by any means Canelo was
able to match a draw and gain a decision victory in what may have been Golovkin’s last few
best years. I do not think we will see a finish but yet another technical display of fighting at the
highest level with both fighters having their moments but with Canelo gaining the edge and his
hand raised by a decision.
