At 31 years old I do not think we have seen the absolute peak of Canelos’ boxing abilities. The man continues to improve each and every time along with stacking more accolades, belts, and history to his name. This weekend Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will look to claim the IBF Super Middleweight Championship from Caleb Plant to become the first four-belt super middleweight champion.
Canelo is just about the perfect fighter that you will find in the boxing world today. He has incredible hand speed, a granite chin, footwork, pace, technique – you name it and Canelo has it in his arsenal. Not to mention he has fought just a who’s who of competition throughout his career with his most recent fight being a victory of Billy Joe Saunders in the eight round.
The odds have Canelo as a sizable favorite at (-900) and the comeback on Plant at (+600). While Plant is a good boxer with an unblemished record of 21-0 he is just not up to par to dethrone Canelo Alvarez – the number one boxer in the world. I think Plant will have a major wake up call when he gets in the ring Saturday night as he has fought nowhere near anyone of the talent of Canelo. Plant will most likely be very mobile and quick on his feet to avoid the power of Canelo while trying to give back some of his own but, it is easier said than done trying to stop Canelo’s aggression. Canelo is very patient though so do not be surprised if we see him start slow again like several times in the past. I believe it could play out like it did against Billy Joe Saunders where Canelo takes his time early on until he understands the patterns of Plant and then goes in for the kill after wearing him down for countless rounds. Look for Canelo to put a stamp on this feud with a referee stoppage in the last two to three rounds of the fight.
