The StubHub Center in Carson, California hosts promoter Michael Aldeguer for a seven fight boxing card with a “Philippines vs Mexico” theme for the three regional title fights at the top of the card. The main fights will air on beIN Sports in Spanish in te United States. Aldeguer is a prolific second generation promoter in the Philippines and this is his third show promoted on US soil. The big name on the card is Donnie Nietes (38-1-4) who is a two division world champion who has held a piece of a world title since 2007, making him one of the longest reigning champions of this era. Here he is fighting in the United States for the second time as he attempts to end his career fighting internationally. This fight represents a move up to a third weight class, and a vacant WBO Inter-Continental title is on the line. For his part, Sosa is a former world champion in his own right, and though he has not been extremely active at age 37, two fights ago in early 2015 he was in their with Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world today. Both men have long toiled in the lower weight classes where the paydays are not that big and both men understand that they need to win this fight to extend their careers. With Gonzalez leading the way, the lower weight classes are receiving more attention than ever, and more money than ever. The WBO International title at featherweight will be defended by 14-0 Mark Magsayo as he faces veteran Ramiro Robles (13-5-1). You get the feeling that Aldeguer has a special place in his heart for Magsayo, the charismatic 21 year old who is already ranked #8 by the WBO. For perspective, that same sanctioning body ranks American prospect Joseph “Jojo” Diaz #7, and the division includes world champions Carl Frampton, Lee Selby, Gary Russell Jr and veterans such as Leo Santa Cruz and Oscar Valdez. Magsayo won the International belt by stopping veteran Chris Avalos in the sixth round of their April fight. For perspective, Avalos went to the fifth round with both Frampton and Valdez, so Magsayo has shown some promise. Nevertheless, not much is known about him and this is an excellent chance to see a potential prospect in one of boxing’s hottest weight classes. The card also features WBO Asia Pacific champion Arthur Villanueva (29-1) as he faces Juan Jimenez (22-10), however that fight is not listed at the sports books at the time of this writing.
