The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) went to Cleveland, OH for the first time in promotional history with UFC 203: Miocic vs Overeem. The solid night of action saw 60 percent of bouts end inside the distance, culminating with the hometown favorite Miocic keeping his belt in Cleveland with a victory. After the event concluded, the UFC awarded $50,000 to two fighters for ‘Performance of the Night’ and two fighters for ‘Fight of the Night’. UFC Fight Night 82’s Post-Fight Bonus-Award winners were… Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem earn Fight of the Night honors for their back and forth battle in the main event of the evening at UFC 203. It instantly became one of the greatest one-round fights in UFC history, with Miocic ultimately finding his way in Overeem’s guard and raining down a ground and pound that rendered the PRIDE and Strikeforce veteran unconscious. The Cleveland-based Croatian successfully made his first title defense and fight fans look forward to seeing him back inside the Octagon for his second, which many predict will either be against former champions Cain Velasquez or Junior Dos Santos, the latter of which would be a rematch to a fight he lost via razor thin decision a couple years back. Noteworthy fight(s): – None. Jessica Andrade earns Performance of the Night for her first-round guillotine choke submission of Joanne Calderwood the Pay-Per-View main card for UFC 203 in Cleveland. Andrade took the fight to the mat in the early going of the round, where she attacked Calderwood with a brutal ground and pound to the head and body. When Calderwood got back to her feet, she succumbed to the Brazilian’s famed guillotine choke and was forced to tap. Yancy Medeiros earns Performance of the Night for his second-round rear naked choke submission of Sean Spencer. It was an impressive way for the Hawaiian to make his welterweight debut, following an up and down run at 155-pounds. Spencer seemed to be getting the better of the exchanges in the early going on the opening stanza, but the tides began to turn when Medeiros landed a head kick at the end of the round. It was another head kick at the start of the second round that marked the beginning of the end for Spencer, as the fight hit the mat and the Hawaiian eventually secured a rear naked choke to get the tapout finish. Noteworthy Performance(s): – Mickey Gall defeated MMA and UFC newcomer Phil “CM Punk” Brooks via first-round rear naked choke to improve to 3-0 as a pro. Gall hopes to for a fight at the UFC 205 card in New York City this November and would prefer to face “Super” Sage Northcutt. – Drew Dober defeated short-notice promotional newcomer Jason Gonzalez via first-round knockout and now enjoys a two-fight winning streak inside the Octagon. It was a beautiful finish by Dober, who displayed crisp boxing and excellent combinations in securing the victory.
