There’s a new MacDonald in the life of Canada’s “Red King” Rory MacDonald. The former UFC welterweight title challenger welcomed a baby girl into the world early Sunday morning. MacDonald’s head coach at Montreal’s TriStar Gym broke the news on social media via Twitter: “Welcome to @rory_macdonald and Olivia’s new arrival. God bless! Rory you got 16 years to beef up that gun collection. #itsagirl” The 26-year-old is coming off a unanimous decision loss against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson last month, which put him at two losses in a row following a fifth round TKO against Robbie Lawler in a ‘Fight of the Year’ welterweight title fight last July. It also marked the last fight on his current UFC contract, so with the final bell of the Thompson bout, he entered free agency. “Red King” is still one of the best 170-pound fighters on the planet, but does not seem to be the same fighter anymore. He does not possess the qualities that earned him the nickname “The Canadian Psycho” amongst fight fans. That serial killer stare he gave his opponents before the opening bell is gone. After having his nose broken twice inside the Octagon and at least once more in training between his last two bouts, I think it is a major question as to where MacDonald is at both physically and mentally. The bigger question mark, however, is where he will land. Will he continue his legacy in the UFC, or will he move on and begin to make waves Bellator? We’ll have to hang on to find out.
