The mixed martial arts (MMA) fantasy website Kountermove is back with another exclusive game for MMAOddsBreaker.com readers. If you’re not familiar with how the site works, here’s a brief snippet from the site owners, themselves.
Kountermove brings the traditional fantasy format to MMA. Accumulation of points and a salary cap make fantasy MMA more intriguing than your basic “pick ’em” contest. With other industry pros on the site it is the place to be if you know your MMA. The game is fairly simple on its face, games are played over a single night during one event. Prior to the event, players get a total of $25,000 fantasy dollars to pick five fighters for your team. Each fighter is given a specific salary by Kountermove. Kountermove assigns a value for each fighter based on how we believe the fight will go. Points are scored if a fighter scores a finish, wins a round, lands significant strikes, knocks an opponent down, scores takedowns, secures dominant positions or attempts submissions. The more dominant your fighters’performance, the more points you’re going to score. If you score more points than your opponents, then you win the money.

If you’re interested in a few pointers on potential fighters to pick, I’ll be offering my analysis and potential picks to click. In case you have your doubts, I have a very nice track record of success with the website, having won plenty since its inception. Before I get to my picks, remember that to get the best value out of your team, you have to try to get an average of $5000 per fighter with your team of five fighters and your $25,000 salary cap. That means if you want to pick a big favorite from UFC 192 like Daniel Cormier ($5600) you have to balance it out by picking some underdogs that you think will perform above and beyond. Sometimes it’s not worth it to pick the overwhelming favorite. Without further ado, here are some of the picks that stand out for me: Albert Tumenov ($4800): Albert Tumenov has been one of my most consistent high-scoring picks in his brief four-fight UFC career thus far. In his last three fights alone he’s picked up two quick first round knockouts and scored a high-action unanimous decision victory that was filled with a ton of significant strikes. I expect nothing less this time around against a gritty Alan Jouban. Jouban is tough and is a good striker in his own right, but he’s displayed some chin issues in his UFC fights thus far and he hasn’t faced anyone even close to as powerful as Tumenov. I think Tumenov either wins a slugfest once again or puts Jouban’s lights out to rack up a big Kountermove score. Underdog Pick of the Night Islam Makhachev ($4500): The hype for Makhachev is getting a little bit out of control, but the extremely talented Dagestani fighter and friend of Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the best prospects to hit the UFC lightweight division in a while. Makhachev is extremely well-rounded and will be a danger to Adriano Martins everywhere. That being said, this is a bit of a risk because Martins is a very talented fighter himself and is coming off a close decision victory over another talented Dagestani in Rustam Khabilov. I still see value in Makhachev because I view him as a more well-rounded version of Khabilov, who will hold his own in the striking with Martins and should be the better ground fighter as well. Fighter to Avoid Rashad Evans ($5100): I’m a big believer in ring rust, and Rashad Evans will be entering his bout against Ryan Bader on a near two-year layoff after suffering a big knee injury which required surgery on two separate occasions. Evans is a former champion in the division and that’s nothing you can take away from him, but he’s also 36 years old now and those two years he lost were huge at this point in his career. He wasn’t looking that great in his fights before getting hurt either, so I’d advise extreme caution in regards to putting Evans on your teams. There are 13 fights on this card and plenty of better options out there.
