My Fights to AVOID betting for UFC Fight Night 70 are: Welterweight bout: Steve Montgomery (-110) vs Tony Sims (+100) Gabe’s Thoughts: Montgomery is certainly the more popular fighter heading into this 170-pound contest, being a competitor for American Top Team on the current season (21) of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) reality television series. While cutting weight for his bout on the show, Montgomery suffered a seizure due to a lack of electrolytes in his system and was removed from the scheduled bout and the TV show altogether. While he is the more popular fighter, I’m not so sure he’s the better fighter. He has many advantages heading into the contest, most of them physical, but I don’t think he is as skilled and one-shot-powerful as the smaller, lighter fighter in Sims. To conclude, this is a tough fight to call and I don’t see value on either side at the current betting odds. For my pick, I am going to say that the fighter with the better chin (Sims) lands the finishing blow during a striking exchange to pick up his first Octagon victory. For a bet, I am just going to shake my head, “no.” Gabe’s Call: Sims by T/KO (punches, 1:38 round 1) Gabe’s Recommended Play: AVOID Bantamweight bout: Danny Martinez (-135) vs Sirwan Kakaj (+125) Gabe’s Thoughts: I slightly lean towards Kakaj getting his hand raised here in his short notice promotional debut, as I think he will manage to do enough over the course of three rounds to pick up a unanimous decision on the judges’ scorecards. I see him winning this fight on the cards as long as he avoids getting caught by the heavy-handed Martinez, who will certainly be looking to take the Swede’s head right off his shoulders. While I see a bit of value in Kakaj at his current betting price of +125 and see this bout as a “dog or pass” situation, I am ultimately going to opt to pass.
