UFC 184 Newcomer Breakdown – Masio Fullen

masioPrior to each UFC card, Jay Primetown takes a close look at debuting fighters. In the latest installment, we look at Mexican Masio Fullen as he takes on fellow TUF Latin American competitor Alexander Torres at UFC 184 in Los Angeles, California.   Masio “El Lobo” Fullen Hometown: Guadalajara, Mexico Age: 27 Height: 5’10” Reach: N/A Weight Class: Featherweight Camp: N/A Career Record: 9-4 Key Wins: Alejandro Perez Key Losses: Alejandro Perez   Background Guadalajara, Mexico native Masio Fullen fought for Team Mexico on the first season of TUF Latin America. He lost in the quarterfinals to eventual finalist Leonardo Morales. Of his nine career wins, five of them have come by submission. Strengths

Weaknesses

  • Poor job defending leg kicks
  • Takedown defense needs serious work
  • Unable to scramble off his back to get fight to return to feet

00GradeFullen   Matchup with Alexander Torres Two fighters that were unable to get a win on TUF Latin America are matched up in the opening fight of UFC 184. Masio Fullen is the striker while Alex “Rolo” Torres is the grappler. Fullen has decent cardio and will certainly push the pace for the majority of the fight. However, expect Torres to put Fullen on his back for large segments of the fight. Torres has an underrated double leg and is more than capable of outwrestling Fullen. As a +135 underdog (at time of publication on Several Bookmakers), there is a path to victory for Torres in this bout. TUF Latin America showed he cannot be trusted as poor fight IQ and loss of his concentration in a fight he was dominating cost him the win. Torres could certainly dominate from top position for 15 minutes or he can lose concentration and get submitted. This fight is a clear pass and one to sit back and watch. UFC Ceiling Masio Fullen is very similar to most of the other Mexican fighters from the first season of TUF Latin America. He’s got a decent all around striking game, but defensively there are holes particularly in his grappling. With really poor defensive wrestling, he’s going to have a hard time controlling fights and putting himself in advantageous positions to win fights. I expect him to struggle in the UFC unless he improves in this area. Even if he does, he simply doesn’t have a weapon good enough to finish fights. It’s difficult to see him lasting in the UFC.   Fight Film Check out Masio Fullen in some of his recent fights:   Masio Fullen vs. Ulises Briones   Masio Fullen vs. Alejandro Perez
